Bassett family papers, 1833-1863 (bulk 1847-1863).

Correspondence, diaries, and family records, 1833-1863 (chiefly 1847-1863), of the Bassett family of Mercer County, Ill., and Lewis County, Ky. Principal figures in these papers are Isaac Bassett (1791-1863), his sons John Ray Bassett (b. 1821) and Isaac Newton Bassett (1825-1920), and Isaac Newton's wife Scienda Moore Bassett (1825-1861). Included is John Ray Bassett's diary, written in Lewis County, 1847-1851, describing his reading in history, literature, and law, and his thoughts on these subjects, and expressing Whig views on current events. Bassett often mentioned floods and business-related Ohio River traffic. A diary of Isaac Bassett, January-October 1863, Lewis County, briefly mentions Civil War activities, locally and elsewhere, and the daily household activities and health of himself and his wife until shortly before his death.
