James Hervey Otey papers, 1823-1885.

The collection includes sermons, diary, and correspondence. The bulk of the collection is made up of more than 130 manuscript sermons and lectures plus a quantity of notes and fragments. The fourteen volumes comprise a diary of Otey's daily activities, 1840-1862 (with occasional gaps). Correspondence includes letters from the 1820s and 1830s from Otey's father, Isaac, a prominent citizen and state legislator from Bedford County, Va., concerning family news, and Virginia politics; letters on church business, including a copy of one from Otey to Bishop John H. Hopkins, 1862, giving Otey's views on the organization of the church in the Confederate States, the effect of the Emancipation Proclamation, and mentioning the abuses of the federal forces occupying Tennessee; and correspondence of Eliza D. (Pannill) Otey, wife of James.
