Peter E. Nathan was born on April 18, 1935, in St. Louis, Missouri. He received the B.A. in social relations from Harvard College in 1957 and the Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Washington University in 1962. He was a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty from 1962 to 1969 and from 1969 to 1987 served as director of clinical training in psychology in the Graduate School at Rutgers, The State University. Himie Voxman is among UI's most honored faculty and administrators. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the UI with high distinction in 1933, and received a master's degree in 1934 in the psychology of music, studying with pioneering researcher Carl Seashore. He taught woodwinds in nearby public schools, then in 1939 became a full-time UI faculty member. He served as director of the School of Music from 1954 until his retirement in 1980.
