Ulysses Simpson Grant (1822-1885) was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1843. He served in the army until 1854, and then re-joined in 1861, eventually rising to the position of supreme commander of all Union forces during the Civil War.
