Contains a variety of materials on Smith's experiences in Operation Overlord and Normandy landings and with 16th Infantry Regiment (1944-45) ; with the Southern Command (1967-68) and 1st Infantry Division and MACV in Vietnam (1968-70). Materials on WWII include transcripts of interviews on the history of the 16th Infantry (1983), D-Day veterans of 1st Infantry (1984) and Normandy Beach landing (1987) ; a lecture on Operation Overlord (1984) and a booklet on the 40th anniversary of D-Day (1984). Official reports and correspondence on activities of the U.S. Southern Command (1967-68) and articles, newspaper clippings, and information on various topics regarding Latin and South America including counterinsurgency, civic action, diplomatic relations, maneuvers and visits made by Smith to various Latin American countries (1967-68). Rest of collection contains materials on the Vietnam War and Smith's command of 1st Infantry Div. in Vietnam and his work with the MACV Command, official reports and correspondence (1969-1975); MACV directory, casualties counts (1969); items on administration of 1st Infantry (1969) and Smith's R & R activities (1969-70).
