Kent was the son of James Kent, the Chancellor of New York and legal commentator. Following his graduation from Union College, he practiced law in New York City. He was appointed a judge of the Circuit Court of New York and taught in the short-lived law school of the University of the City of New York. He also taught law at Harvard Law School (1846-1847).
