Fair copies of notes taken in from lectures on the topics of natural philosophy and moral philosophy, probably at King's College, Aberdeen, during the period 1791-1793. Topics discuss the history of both disciplines and the achievements of historical and contemporary philosophers and physicists, such as Newton, Hutcheson, Smith and Reid. It is probable that James Dunbar was the lecturer speaking on "Institutes of moral philosophy," especially because the lecturer repeatedly refers students to Dunbar's "Essays on the history of mankind." Dunbar taught at Aberdeen until his April 1794 retirement the year after these lectures were given. It is unlikely that Dunbar was also the lecturer on natural philosophy, but it is unclear to which of his colleagues this lecture can be attributed.
