A restoration defeated : or the loves of Titus and Teraminta, a tragedy. [ca. 1702]

Manuscript of Charles Gildon's play A restoration defeated, or, the loves of Titus and Teraminta. This adaptation of Nathaniel Lee's Lucius Junius Brutus was initially banned by the Master of the Revels, as Lee's play had been in 1680. Gildon then revised the play, removing much of its potentially offensive political content and changing the setting. Newly re-titled The patriot or the Italian conspiracy, it was performed and published by the end of 1702. Gildon's preface to the 1702 publication details the alterations he made from both Lee's play and from his previous version. Neither the text nor the title of this original banned version had been known before the discovery of the manuscript during 2004-2008 dispersal of the library of the Earls of Macclesfield at Shirburn Castle. The majority of the text was probably written by a scribe, but annotations and cancellations may have been made by Gildon himself or by censors. A 1723 letter from Thomas Parker, the first Earl of Macclesfield, to the Duke of Norfolk implies a connection between Gildon and Macclesfield, which perhaps explains the Macclesfield's ownership of this particular volume.
