Chiefly literary extracts, including many quotations from Shakespeare. Loosely arranged by subject. Contains also many curious facts. A search in Southey's Commonplace book, ed. J. W. Warter (London, 1850, 4v.), has revealed no use of these two volumes in its compilation. V.1 has autograph of Southey and date June 27, 1799 on front fly leaf.
