Kent State University celebrated its 50th anniversary during the 1959-1960 academic year. In order to prepare and promote the events and activities surrounding the anniversary, President George Bowman appointed a Semicentennial Committee in 1956. Phillip Raymond Shriver was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 16, 1922. Shriver received his B.A. from Yale in 1943, M.A from Harvard in 1946, and Ph.D. from Columbia in 1954. He married Martha Damaris Nye on April 15, 1944. From 1947 to 1965, Shriver was a member of the history faculty at Kent State University, serving as Dean of the College of Arts and Science from 1963 to 1965. George Arvene Bowman was born May 11, 1893, in Galion, Ohio. Due to the death of his father and illness of his mother, Bowman was raised by his grandfather in Edison, Ohio. He finished high school in 1911 and received a certificate which permitted him to teach elementary school in Ohio for one year. In September 1911, he began teaching at the one-room Gardner School. The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings.
