In 1942 the U.S. Navy opened an inland shipyard in Evansville, Ind., primarily for building Landing Ship Tanks, an amphibious landing craft. The Evansville Shipyard became the largest wartime employer in Evansville, employing over 19,000 workers. It ceased production late in the summer of 1945.
