Kathleen Chapman graduated from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in political science and English. She married Allen R. Chapman in 1961 and the couple had two sons. Chapman later returned to the university and in 1974 graduated with distinction from the Law School.
