Papers of Catherine Lewis, 1995.

Field reports and demographic information on persons interviewed by Catherine Lewis in an oral history project conducted in 1995 for the Smithsonian Institution's Festival of American Folklife and for the 1996 sesquicentennial celebration of the Festival of Iowa Folklife. The interviews were intended to elicit how the individual's art or sport related to their life and community in Iowa. They include field reports of interviews with members of the Iowa City Women's Softball B-League, Johnson County 4-H, M and M's Quilting Guild, Iowa City Craft Guild, Beverly G. Everett, a representative of the Rural Women's Choruses, Irish folk musician Dennis Roseman, and chainsaw artist Jerry Edle. Of particular importance in the collection are nine sound cassettes containing eleven recorded interviews, seven of which are with members of the softball team. Other interviews are with Karen Sue Ackerman and Marilyn Woodin of the M and M's Quilting Guild, Beverly G. Everett of the Rural Women's Choruses, and Jeanne Cadoret of the Iowa City Craft Guild.

Beverly Everett, farmer, substitute teacher, speaker, writer, and professional volunteer, was from a musical Iowa farm family. Active in 4-H and the Farm Bureau, Everett emphasized the importance of women's roles in agriculture. Everett was also deeply involved in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), through which she gave many speeches across the country.
