Merle Miller was born on May 17, 1919 in Montour, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa from 1935 to 1938 and 1939 to 1940, and the London School of Economics from 1938 to 1939. From 1940 to 1941 he served as Washington correspondent for the Philadelphia Record. Miller then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an editor of Yank magazine, from 1941 to 1945.
