Papers of Norma Peg Burke, 1965-1980 (bulk 1975-1977).

Official records and reports, memoranda, newspaper clippings, newsletters, speeches, and other documents highlighting Burke's career and her efforts to foster equality in women's athletics. The papers document the attempts of the NCAA to take over women's athletics, the implementation of the Title IX policy as regards equality of the sexes in all aspects of education, and the attempts to modify Iowa high school's traditional 6-player girls' basketball. The bulk of the collection documents the activities of the AIAW and especially its relationship with the NCAA over a 9-year period, 1971 to 1980, including a selection of official AIAW records from 1975 to 1977. The papers also chronicle Burke's contributions to several groups supporting equal rights for women: the National Women's Conference, the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, and the Iowa Coordinating Committee of International Women's Year.
