Papers of the Sterns Family, 1858-1947.

The papers of the Sterns family consist of correspondence, photographs, clippings, and memorabilia. The correspondence includes letters written by Thomas to his wife and son during the Civil War, in which he describes camp life and battle. There is also war correspondence from Lavinia's brother, Edward Van Deusen, who died in the Battle of Petersburg in 1864. Albert Sterns wrote letters to his wife, Lottie, and mother from various railroading jobs and from the Yukon in which he describes the Klondike gold fields. Finally, there are letters written to Lavinia's daughter, Alta, from Fred B. Carver, who was a soldier during the Spanish American War. The memorabilia includes such items as the pen used by Thomas Rescum Sterns during the war, buttons from his uniform, Albert's toy boat, railway badges, etc.

Thomas Rescum Sterns was a corporal in Company F, 29th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the siege of Vicksburg. He and his wife, Lavinia C. Van Deusen Sterns Mathews, had one son, Albert Henry Sterns. Albert Sterns spent most of his career working on various railroads, but also participated in the Alaskan Gold Rush.
