The Fox family papers span more that fifty years and consist of correspondence, academic records, newspaper clippings, photos, and memorabilia. They document Walter H. Fox's experiences as a captain in U.S. Army, Reserve Officers' Medical Corps, in France during World War I. Also included are, Helen Fox Angell's experiences as a hospital recreation worker with the American Red Cross in England and Belgium during World War II, and after the war in the Panama Canal Zone. Many of the letters are to Bess Peebles Fox, wife of Walter H. Fox.

Walter H. Fox was born in Iowa, received his medical degree and later taught anatomy at the University of Iowa. He joined the army in World War I and was stationed in France. After the war he helped the Italian Red Cross in Serbia, where he died. His daughter, Helen Fox Angell, was a high school English and French teacher.
