The papers consist primarily of correspondence relating to the study and practice of medicine during the mid-19th century with several references to medical problems and treatments during the Civil War, and to college life in Ann Arbor, Mich. (late 1860s to early 1870s). Correspondents include Dr. Asa A. Bean, his wife, Mary Powell Bean, and their children, John, James, and Mary.
