John Green Brady (1848-1918), Yale Class of 1874, arrived in Alaska in 1878 and in 1881 he founded the Sitka Boys' Home for the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. He became involved in Alaskan politics, was appointed an United States Commissioner in 1884 and Alaskan governor in 1897, serving until 1906 when a political conflict caused his resignation. The Redpath Lyceum Bureau was founded by James C. Redpath in 1868 as a commercial lecture bureau. In 1901, Keith Vawter purchased a one-third interest in the bureau, and in 1904 launched the first Chautauqua circuit. The Redpath Lyceum Bureau had offices in a number of locations including Cedar Rapids, Iowa; White Plains,New York; Columbus, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois, and; Kansas City, Missouri. Charles Spalding Thomas (December 6, 1849 – June 24, 1934) was a United States Senator from Colorado. Born in Darien, Georgia he attended private schools in Georgia and Connecticut, and served briefly in the Confederate Army. Thomas served as the 11th Governor of Colorado from 1899 to 1901.
