Carter Godwin Woodson collection, 1876-1999.

The collection consists of materials collected by Carter G. Woodson relating mainly to the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History (ASAALH), Associated Publishers, and Journal of Negro History. Materials relating to ASAALH include programs for annual meetings, Black History Month kits, and other printed material. Items relating to Associated Publishers include book lists and advertisements for the publication of various works. The collection also includes Black History Month kits created by other organizations, newspaper clippings regarding Carter G. Woodson and Charles Drew, original photographs probably used in various publications, and Black History Month kits created by other organizations. There is a small amount of correspondence to and from Carter Woodson from 1918-1943.

Carter Godwin Woodson, educator and historian, was considered the Father of Black History. He was born December 19, 1875, New Canton, Virginia. He was an African-American historian, author, and journalist who, in 1915, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926 he pioneered the concept of a "Negro History Week," which was later expanded into Black History Month. Woodson died at his home in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C., on April 3, 1950....
