Edward Payson Mathewson papers, 1890-1936.

The collection contains professional diaries of Edward Payson Mathewson reflecting his career from 1890 to 1936. The material deals with the smelting process of several minerals and the design of smelting facilities, as well as the business operations of the numerous companies for which Mathewson worked. Within the diaries are notes, data tables, correspondence, clippings, and the addresses of colleagues and friends. Mathewson kept multiple diaries concurrently, so some diaries span a period of years. The collection also contains photographs, blueprints, and lecture notes from Mathewson's teaching experience at the University of Arizona.

Edward Payson Mathewson was a mining engineer. He began his career with the Pueblo Smelting and Refining Company in Colorado, rising to superintendent in 1889. He later worked for H. Guggenheim & Sons in Mexico, New Jersey, and Chile. In 1902 he joined the Anaconda Mining Company and worked in Montana until 1916. The Anaconda claim was located in 1875. In 1881 Marcus Daly discovered the copper vein that began copper mining in Butte, Montana. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company was organized on June 18, 1895 in Butte and it dominated the early industrial history of Montana.
