The Joyce Kilmer papers, 1907-1980 (bulk 1917-1941).

The Joyce Kilmer papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts, and other material relating to the Kilmer family. The largest group of correspondence is from Joyce to Aline Kilmer, but there are also substantial series of letters to and from other members of the family, including Joyce Kilmer's mother, Annie Kilburn Kilmer, and eldest son, Kenton Sinclair Kilmer. Among other major correspondents are James J. Daly, the Jesuit poet, essayist and biographer, and Charles L. O'Donnell, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame 1928-1934. Also Included are letters from literary contemporaries of the Kilmers such as Theodore Maynard and Harriet Monroe; correspondence from the Kilmers' publishers regarding copyright and royalties; copies of published musical settings of Kilmer poems; two theses in manuscript on the life and work of Aline Kilmer; manuscripts of essays, poetry, and stories, both by Joyce Kilmer and others; newsclippings and articles by and about the Kilmer family; and a few related photographs, including one of William Butler Yeats and Fr. Charles L. O'Donnell. The final items in the collection are news articles about the return of U.S. soldiers from Europe and Joyce Kilmer's death, along with the 'Croix de guerre' medal presented to Kenton Kilmer on behalf of his father and a photocopy of the 'Citation à l'Ordre de l'Armée' signed by Marshal Pétain.
