Four autograph letters signed (one is a fragment) by Hosmer to Lydia Maria Child and one transcribed by and in the hand of the recipient, ca. 1855-ca. 1865. Letters describe her work, particularly her design for the Lincoln Memorial in Springfield, Ill., and her statue of Zenobia which critics attributed to John Gibson despite his denials. Hosmer asks for Child's support in refuting the charges.

Harriet Goodhue Hosmer (October 9, 1830 – February 21, 1908) was a neoclassical sculptor, considered the most distinguished female sculptor in America during the 19th century. Lydia Maria Child was born Lydia Maria Francis in Medford, Massachusetts on February 11, 1802. She was born into an abolitionist family and was greatly influenced by her brother, Convers, who would later become a Unitarian Clergyman.
