The eldest of ten children, Bedinger was born in Flushing, N.Y., daughter of Mary Bowne Lawrence and John Watson Lawrence, a Congressman from New York. She married Henry Bedinger, Congressman from West Virginia, in 1847. They had three children. From 1853 to 1855 Henry Bedinger was U.S. Minister to Denmark. Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, suffragist, early feminist, political activist, and Iowa State alumna (1880), was born on January 9, 1859 in Ripon, Wisconsin to Maria Clinton and Lucius Lane. At the close of the Civil War, the Lanes moved to a farm near Charles City, Iowa where they remained throughout their lives.
