Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Harriet M. Bedell was trained as a missionary at the Deaconess Training Center in New York City. She spent the greater part of her life working for the Episcopal Board of Missions and living with a number of North American tribes, including ten years with the Cheyenne, seventeen with Indians of Alaska, and twenty with the Seminoles.
