The Lakeville History Group was founded in 1930 by a group of women historians who had been excluded from a male historians' conference. Membership was open to women teaching in various eastern colleges; most members were from New England. The group met once a year socially, worked for the recognition of women in the American Historical Association, encouraged research in women's history, and supported proposals to improve the status of women in the profession.
