This collection includes personal and professional correspondence between James Dexter Havens and his friends, relatives, fellow artists, patrons, and galleries. Also included are newspaper clippings, a transcription of a radio interview with Havens, several obituaries, and a diary kept by Havens when he was 15 years old.

Born in 1900 and diagnosed with diabetes at age 14, Rochester, New York artist James Dexter Havens was ill for much of his childhood. At age 22, he was the recipient of the first insulin injections in America when his father, a lawyer, Eastman Kodak executive and former U.S. Congressman, learned of insulin research being done in Canada and procured a supply to save his son. Artist and art educator Norman Kent (1903-1972) graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1925. He began his career as a Buffalo-based illustrator before teaching at Hobart and William Smith colleges in Geneva. He later served as the editor of American Artist magazine for more than 25 years.
