Collection is mostly genealogical notes and copies of wills compiled by Thomas Jefferson Stubbs, but includes report cards and speeches of Stubbs while a student at the College of William and Mary; letters of William Carter Stubbs while a student at William and Mary; and letters of John Catlett Stubbs while studying medicine in Charlottesville and Baltimore. The collection also includes bills and receipts of people who lived in Gloucester County, Va.

William Carter Stubbs was a native of Gloucester County, Va. In 1872, he became professor of chemistry at Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Auburn University) and six years later, state chemist of Alabama. He married Elizabeth Saunders Blair. In 1885, Stubbs was made director of Louisiana Sugar Experiment Station, New Orleans, La. He later became state chemist and geologist of Louisiana. He and his wife made genealogical notes and copied public records. Stubbs died in 1924. ...

Thomas Jefferson Stubbs was born 14 September 1841 in Gloucester County, Va. He attended the College of William and Mary and served in the 34th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army. Stubbs then attended the University of Virginia. He was professor of mathematics at the University of Arkansas in Batesville and was professor of math at the College of William and Mary from 1888 until his death in 1915.
