Holmes writes to "Hibernia" (Lady Castleton) on Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Supreme Judicial Court Letterhead discussing Wagner's Operas. "I went last night to Siegfried...I have a feeling of enlarged life, of having had the minutest fibers of my nerves shaken with the passion of fairyland." He continues that he has been sent a copy of Froude's Erasmus which "we have begun to read aloud..." and "...listening to an appeal from a decision of mine as to the dismissal of an officer from the militia..."
