Collection comprises primarily letters written by Methodist missionary Myra Snow to her family and other Americans while she taught at Keen School in Tientsin (Tianjin), northern China. Her letters begin in 1928 and end in 1937; there is a gap from 1931 to 1936. The correspondence offers insights into life in China beyond the Keen School, including observations on political developments, the poverty she encountered, and the cultural convergence of traditional Chinese culture and Christianity as shown in events such as weddings. The collection does not document Snow's life after World War II. Snow was interned by the Japanese in 1941, and the collection includes a 1944 letter from missionary Myra Jaquet discussing the internment of American missionaries. Myra Snow's letters describe cultural, social, and political transitions in China, as well as her own reactions to living in a culture foreign to her. For example, she comments on the seeming popularity and subsequent fall from grace of the "Christian General" Feng Yuxiang (or Feng Yu-hsiang). She also discusses poverty and the difficulty of creating equal opportunity in China, and describes the 1937 Japanese takeover of Tianjin.

American Myra Anna Jaquet (1884-1971) was a Methodist missionary in northern China from 1911 to 1942. She worked as an instructor of girls at a missionary school in Peking (Beijing) and in Tientsin (Tianjin) at the Gamewell School. In December 1941, she was interned by the Japanese as a prisoner of war. She was repatriated to the United States in 1943 and lived in New York until her return to Tianjin in 1946.
