Marian Anderson discusses her childhood, early musical experiences, the meaning of spirituals, her first encounter with racism, the advantages of formal musical education, how children are taught racial attitudes, her recollections of Paul Robeson, the response to her performances of spirituals on her international tours, her experience of singing at the shrine to Mahatma Gandhi, the Lincoln Memorial concert of 1939 which came about from the refusal of the D.A.R. to allow her to perform in Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., her views concerning segregation, and some of her basic beliefs about life.

Marian Anderson was born on February 27, 1897 (although throughout much of her life she gave her birth date as February 17, 1902) in south Philadelphia. Her father, John Berkley Anderson, sold ice and coal and her mother Annie Delilah Rucker Anderson was a former schoolmistress. She was the oldest of three sisters. Richard Rodgers, composer and producer, was born in New York on June 28, 1902. He composed his first song, My Auto Show Girl when he was fourteen years old.
