Ansil Crouch, a Union soldier, writes about his encounters with Lincoln. As the son of a prominent Peoria, Illinois doctor he was on the platform with his father at the Lincoln-Douglas debates and met Lincoln. Later at a reception in Washington he again met Lincoln and was presented to Mrs. Lincoln. When Lincoln was assasinated his regiment was on guard duty in Washington and he formed part of the honor guard while Lincoln's body lay in the Rotunda of the Capital.
