Platte D. Lyman, a son of Amasa Lyman and Eliza Partridge Lyman, was born on August 20, 1848, in a wagon on the Platte River. He was called by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help Silas S. Smith head the San Juan Mission in 1879, and essentially took over command of the expedition during Smith's prolonged absences.
