Personal correspondence of Samuel Ryan Curtis, chiefly his letters to his brother Henry Barnes Curtis (1799-1885), a prominent Ohio lawyer. Included are: a 1828 letter from West Point, discussing the cadet life and national politics (including the presidential elections); letters recounting Curtis' service in the Mexican War (1846, July - 1847, Nov.), his political and professional activities in 1849 and 1857, the Civil War (including the battle of Pea Ridge), and post-war service.

Born near Champlain, New York, Curtis graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1831. He was stationed at Fort Gibson in the Indian Territories (present-day Oklahoma) before resigning from the Army in 1832. He moved to Ohio, where he worked as a civil engineer on the Muskingum River improvement projects and also became a lawyer in 1841.
