Samuel Roper (b. 1839), of Colcanda, Illinois, entered the 56th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a lieutenant in February 1862. He saw action in the Franklin and Nashville Campaigns, in the Vicksburg Campaign, and at Missionary Ridge. Roper was promoted to captain of Company K, and was discharged as a major in August 1865.
