Stephen Spender diary, 1975.

Diary written during a trip taken by Sir Stephen and his son, Matthew, to Venice, discussing visits to various art galleries including the Peggy Guggenheim museum and his reactions to some of the paintings viewed by them, relating amusing anecdotes about incidents at social gatherings, and concluding with a discussion as to the meaning of the trip for father and son. Included are two drawings by Matthew Spender, one of which is inscribed to his father.

Sir Stephen Harold Spender (February 28, 1909 - July 16, 1995) was an English poet and novelist who worked with the themes of social injustice and class struggle. Spender was born in London and educated at University College, Oxford. He was mentored by W. H. Auden with whom he maintained a life-long friendship.
