Frank Watson Carpenter papers, 1909-1959.

Papers of Frank W. Carpenter contain correspondence (1909-1944), primarily between Carpenter and his friend Col. Edward Bowditch, Jr. The letters relate primarily to the government and current events in the Philippines where Carpenter served as Department Governor to Mindanao and Sulu and where Bowditch had served as an aide to the Governor-General. The letters continue through Carpenter's retirement from service in the Philippines, to his work with the New England Oil Corporation, Ltd. in Venezuela, and into retirement. Also included in the collection are Carpenter's diaries (1936-1941, 1943) containing brief intermittent entries on his daily activities; and supporting documents and correspondence relating to attempts to procure a pension or annuity for Carpenter through two private House resolutions in 1935 and 1937. Additional correspondents include John J. Pershing and William H. Taft.
