Typescript of "Some Unpublished History of the Southwest" by Col. Cornelius C. Smith, a direct descendent of the Oury brothers, William S. and Granvillle H., who arrived in Tucson, Arizona in the 1850's. Both men were Virginians by birth and fought in the Civil War on the Southern side. Both were active leaders in Tucson, and this history is taken from their papers and reminiscenses. Also included are excerpts from a diary written by Mrs. Granvile H.Oury when she and her husband had to flee to Mexico after the Civil War.

The Oury family was an Arizona pioneer family, prominent in territorial political and military affairs. William S. Oury served as first Mayor of Tucson, 1864, and sheriff of Pima County, 1873-1877; he was a participant in the Camp Grant Massacre in which about 100 Aravaipa Apaches were killed. With Sylvester Mowry, he purchased the "Arizonian" newspaper of Tubac and moved it to Tucson.
