Identification on accompanying note(typed): John Marin(1870-1953). Steichen, Sheeler, and Marin shown here, were long-time friends. Marin was an architect before taking up painting. He lived in Europe from 1905-1910, where he studied the work of Cezanne and the Cubists. Back in the United States, he developed an original technique in water color, a use of the flat paper surface exploding into dynamic scenes of the Maine coast and New York skyscrapers.

Edward Jean Steichen, born Eduard Jean Steichen (March 27, 1879 – March 25, 1973), was a Luxembourgish American photographer, painter, and curator. His were the photographs that most frequently appeared in Alfred Stieglitz's groundbreaking magazine Camera Work during its publication from 1903 to 1917.
