Letters to and between Samuel Shaw; his wife, Elizabeth Owen (Clarke) Shaw; their daughter Laura Agnes (Shaw) Hudson and her husband, Dr. E. Darwin Hudson, Jr., of New York, N.Y.; Dr. Shaw's son, Dr. Samuel Francis Shaw (known as Frank Shaw), U.S. Navy Surgeon, in Philadelphia; Dr. Shaw's daughters: Stella Augusta Shaw and Sarah Gertrude Shaw, both unmarried, of Plainfield; Shaw's son, Charles Lyman Shaw, unmarried, school teacher at Astoria, N.Y.; Shaw's grandson, Darwin S. Hudson; and granddaughter Clara E. Hudson. Other subjects include New York City politics and street parades; medical problems such as Brights' disease, bedbugs, yellow fever, scarlet fever, and other illnesses; medicines prescribed; some description of the medical practice of Samuel Shaw and his problems in the travel to homes of patients; minor glimpses of life in Plainfield. Housekeeping problems reflected in Laura Hudson's letters include sanitation problems and lack of plumbing but her letters also provide details of parties given, household furnishings, costs of food, and investments; letters of Frank Shaw to his sisters describe the bombardment of Fort Sumter and the Coastal blockade. Other materials included in the collection are diaries, casebook, and notebook of E. Darwin Hudson, Sr.; genealogical chart on the Colson family of Cummington, Mass.; notes on the genealogy of the Joseph Hawley family, of Northampton, Mass.; medical logbooks of Dr. S. Francis Shaw; and notebook and other materials of Charles Lyman Shaw relating to Norwalk Classical Institute, Norwalk, Conn., as well as college papers and weather records.
