Christina Schaefer collection, 1795-1892.

The bulk of the collection consists of letters to Amon Hawley of Farmington, Connecticut from family and associates in New York, Ohio and Iowa. Topics include construction of the Erie Canal, land sales and purchases, borrowing and lending money, difficulties of exchanging western funds for eastern funds, and peddling opportunities in the South. Correspondents include G.W. St. John, Noadiah Hart, and Chauncey Hawley. Also an account book of Amon Hawley in which D. Gates barters washing and sewing for goods and services. A sizable number of documents are deeds for land in Farmington involving Henry D. Hawley and Amon Hawley. Of particular note are letters written from William T. Rossiter to his parents while William served in the U.S. Army in the South during the Civil War. Additional items include orders of metal to Samuel Yale of Meriden; personal and business correspondence of assorted individuals and firms; two letters about trading in the West Indies; bills and receipts, many sent to John H. Carew of Somers, Connecticut, and legal documents including wills, power of attorney appointments and deeds.
