Vernon Scannell papers, 1948-1971.

Consists of nine autograph letters from Scannell to his wife Jo, written in 1967 from Brixton Prison, London, England. Also included are autograph drafts of poems, radio scripts and plays, and the autobiographical piece, A Proper Gentleman, written in eleven notebooks, writing tablets, and on individual sheets. The writings are arranged alphabetically by title and date from 1948 to 1971.

Vernon Scannell, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and free-lance author, poet, and broadcaster since 1962, was born on 23 January 1922 in Lincolnshire and educated at Leeds University.
