Buckingham was a royalist in the civil war. He was voted a traitor by the House of Commons in 1648, and his estate was sequestered. He escaped from England in 1648, becoming a privy councilor of the exiled Charles II. He fought for the king in defeat at Worcester in 1651 but later became estranged from him.
