Vegetational re-visit, Great Rift, southeastern Idaho, circa 1957-1999.

The documents are divided into two parts, the historic materials from 1957-1967 and the documentation of Dr. Neil West's 1990s revisit of the area. The historic documents include materials from a 1957 USDA Soil Conservation Service initiated project entitled "Soil-range interpretation." The soil-range interpretation project included a range conservationist and a soil scientist working together to survey vegetation and assess soils, in relict areas of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. Two important researchers from this survey were V.K. Hugie and H.B. Passey. In the early 1990s Dr. West utilized this historical collection as he and his team revisited sites of relict vegetation from the earlier study. West's revisit encompassed areas of vegetation isolated by prehistoric lava flows (called kipukas), rendering them inaccessible to grazing animals, and representative of pre-settlement vegetation. West's raw data is included in this collection, along with extensive photographs (prints, negatives, and slides) from both surveys.
