Scrapbook, undated, 1938-1950

This series comprises an undated scrapbook of photographs, news clippings, brochures, and publications highlighting the work of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in evangelization efforts among African Americans living in the United States and the establishment of congregations to minister to African Americans. The scrapbook titled, "Colored Missions of the American Lutheran Church," is an unbound scrapbook of loose leaf pages with front and back covers that attach to the pages with a cord. For preservation purposes, the cord was replaced with unbleached cotton tape and pages were interleaved with acid-free paper. This scrapbook comprises photographic prints, photographic images from news magazines, examples of promotional literature, and articles from church publications, that depict the various mission areas that comprises the work of the ALC's Commission on Negro Missions in the United States. Given its preservation issues, the scrapbook is in very good condition. Items are stapled to black, acidic paper, but all items are viewable and in excellent condition. Care should be taken though to handle the scrapbook as infrequently as possible. In addition to the scrapbook, there is one folder of photocopies of news articles that were originally printed on newsprint. Because of the extreme acidity of newsprint, for preservation purposes these articles were photocopied and the originals were discarded. At the time of processing, it was unclear if these were part of a second scrapbook. They do not appear to have been a part of the scrapbook that comprises this series.
