Papers of Evan Richard Stanley [manuscript]. 1908-1925.

Copies of papers relating to the life of Stanley collected by Hugh Davis from a variety of sources, both archival and published, in addition to the Stanley family. Includes copies of published scientific papers and geological surveys and reports relating to Papua, newspaper cuttings, correspondence and other papers. The collection also includes a typescript chronology of Stanley's life prepared by Hugh Davis, 1985-86, and copies of correspondence gathered by Davis in the course of his research, 1966-85.

Hugh Davis, the son of Nathaniel and Martha Davis, was born November 22, 1811, in Fayette County, Kentucky. He moved to Marion, Alabama, in 1834 and began a successful career as an attorney. Davis married Sarah Rachel Jones in 1839, and the couple had seven children. In 1848, Davis assumed the management of the Beaver Bend plantation along the Cahaba River. First Government Geologist for Papua, from 1911 - 1924. He conducted geological investigations that resulted in more than 50 papers and reports and the first comprehensive accounts (in 1923 and 1924) of the geology and resources of both the New Guinea and Papua Territories.
