Letter book [manuscript]. 1881-1909.

Pages 1-168 contain copies of letters written by Spencer in Australia, some to friends in Australia such as Dr Felix Meyer, and others to his mother, relatives and schoolfriends in the United State. The letters refer to his engagement to Florence Fraser (1881) and later love affairs, social life, work in the United States Consulate in Melbourne, a visit to Sydney and the Blue Mountains (1882), speeches by his father, business plans and his acceptance of post of Vice Consul-General for Italy. The remainder of the letterbook comprises copies of letters written by Spencer in Seattle. They mostly relate to financial and business matters and to Spencer's work as Consular Agent for Italy in Seattle. Some letters are in Italian. There are also references to family matters, including the deaths of his father and daughter.
