The papers are arranged into 13 series: 1. Correspondence: family, 1956-71: letters from mother, sister & niece; general, 1949-84: letters from other artists & writers. Some of the correspondents are Edward & Honor Smith, Errol Peisby, Tom & Else Gleghorn, Lloyd Rees, Patrick White, Pam Bell & Desiderius Orban & Alister Kershaw. 2. Diaries & notebooks, 1948, 1958-87. Diaries kept during his travels. Notebooks contain drafts of his writings. 3. Manuscripts: drafts, typescripts & working notes of writings, including "Master pieces of Australian paintings" (1969), William Dobell" (1964) & "Robert Klippel" (1983). 4. Australian National Gallery, 1973-82: reports, financial statements, some correspondence & minutes of meetings. 5. William Dobell Art Foundation, 1975-79: correspondence, reports, photographs & minutes of meetings. 6. Visual Art Board, 1974-76: minutes of meetings, grant applications & reports. 7. Commonwealth Art Advisory Board, 1972-73: minutes, financial papers, reports & some correspondence.

William Dobell was a painter and graphic artist. Born in Newcastle in 1899, Dobell was educated at Cooks Hill Commercial Public School and became a draughtman in 1916 for a local architect. In 1924 he enrolled at Julian Ashton's Art School in Sydney and went on to study overseas after he won Society of Artists' travelling scholarship in April 1929.
