Letterbook [manuscript]. 1838-1844.

The letterbook is in three parts: 1. Approximately sixty letters written by Craigie from Edinburgh between February and June 1838. The letters, which are mostly concerned with Craigie's financial arrangements, are indexed. The recipients include: William Flett, James Waddell, John Anderson, Mary Craigie and William Cullan. 2. Approximately a hundred letters written from Adelaide between January 1839 and December 1843. The letters mostly to Mary Craigie Kirkwall (Craigie's mother), Eleonore (his estranged wife), Edward Stephen (Manager of the Bank of South Australia) and John Morphett (Craigie's solicitor). The topics include domestic and family matters; the general conditions of trade and prices in Adelaide; Craigie's entitlement to servants' free passages from the South Australian Colonisation Commissioners; and news of Craigie's financial difficulties and second marriage. 3. Seven letters from Sydney and twenty-one from Hong Kong, written between December 1843 and June 1844. They include letters written to Janet Craigie (Craigie's second wife), his sister and friends concerning his financial situation; and John Dunmore Lang, who was to arrange for the payment of fares for his wife and child from Sydney to Hong Kong.
