Miscellaneous papers, 1870-1946, including biographical and bibliographical material on Mathews assembled by A.P. Elkin, 1942-46. 8. Publications and reprints of articles by Mathews on anthropology, 1890-1910.

Anthropologist and Anglican priest, Elkin was Head of the Department of Anthropology at Sydney University from 1934-1956, and held a number of professional and academic memberships. His main area of study was the anthropology of Australian Aboriginal people, with a focus also on the people of Papua New Guinea. He was also the editor of Oceania (1933-1979). Surveyor and anthropologist. After his retirement as a surveyor in the early 1890s, he spent twenty years researching the anthropology and languages of the Australian Aborigines. During this time he had over 100 papers published in anthropological and scientific journals. R.H. Mathews was the father of ornithologist Gregory Mathews.
